Participant Funding Program decision – Ontario Power Generation’s licence amendment application for the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station

On October 23, 2023, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) announced that it was offering a total of $30,000 through its Participant Funding Program (PFP). This funding was to assist Indigenous Nations and communities, members of the public and interested parties in reviewing Ontario Power Generation’s licence amendment application for the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station. The proposed amendment would authorize OPG to commercially produce the cobalt-60 radionuclide.

Background

The CNSC made PFP support available to:

• provide new, distinctive and valuable information to the CNSC through informed and topic-specific interventions
• assist interested parties in reviewing the licence application and in participating in the Commission hearing process for OPG’s licence amendment application

A funding review committee (FRC), was established to review the funding applications received by the CNSC’s PFP administrator and to make recommendations on allocating up to $30,000 to eligible applicants.

On December 7, 2023 the FRC met to review 1 PFP applications received by the CNSC, requesting a total of $12,000.

CNSC participant funding decision

The CNSC has carefully considered the FRC’s recommendations on the allocation of participant funding and has approved the reimbursement of up to $12,000 for the following recipient:
