Progress of CNSC regulatory research on geological disposal
Summary of the technical paper/presentation presented at:
IAEA URF Technical Meeting on Global Progress in Developing Geological Disposal Solutions
June 19–23, 2017
Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission
Two initiatives for the deep geological disposal of radioactive wastes are currently being proposed for Canada. CNSC staff conduct regulatory research in order to acquire and maintain independent scientific knowledge to support informed licensing decisions on geological disposal of radioactive wastes and to disseminate objective information to stakeholders. The presentation provided an update of research projects and progress at the CNSC. The presentation also included up-to-date research results from two projects: the hydro-mechanics of Cobourg limestone and the effect of brine on MX-80 bentonite.
