Abstract:

A safety report demonstrates that the design of Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs) meets design and safety requirements through safety analysis by using modelling & simulation (M&S) tools. M&S uncertainties must be accounted for in a safety analysis to ensure a high level of confidence in M&S results. The accepted process for evaluating M&S tools is based on the general concept of verification and validation (V&V). As a key ingredient of V&V, uncertainly qualification (UQ) has always been an important endeavour for both regulators and licensees. This lecture presents an extensive overview of M&S and UQ for NPP safety analysis. The lecture not only describes UQ fundamentals but also demonstrates UQ through a case study for CANDU reactors. The lecture is designed for students and beginners, but is also beneficial to experienced professionals.
