CNSC President's speech to the Natural Resources Committee

President Binder was invited to appear in front of the House of Commons' Natural Resources Committee on June 5. He was invited to discuss Bill C-22, an Act respecting Canada's offshore oil and gas operations, enacting the Nuclear Liability and Compensation Act, repealing the Nuclear Liability Act and making consequential amendments to other Acts. President Binder's participation was as part of a panel and consisted of an opening statement followed by rounds of questions from Committee Members.

Presentation to Safety and Integrity Summit, Canadian Gas Association (PDF)

On October 1, 2014, Terry Jamieson, CNSC Vice-President of the Technical Support Branch, made a presentation at the Safety and Integrity Summit presented by the Canadian Gas Association, in Ottawa. Mr. Jamieson participated in a panel discussion, highlighting perspectives on safety and integrity by other asset intensive/risk based industries. His presentation answered the following questions: What does safety mean to you? What is the current state of your safety programs/culture? How much is too much? The presentation also provided an overview of the CNSC, an explanation of Fukushima and explained how post-Fukushima has changed the CNSC’s approach to safety and risk.

Presentation to the National Insurance Conference of Canada (PDF)

On September 23, 2014, Terry Jamieson, Vice-President of the Technical Support Branch at the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), made a presentation at the National Insurance Conference of Canada, in Ottawa. The presentation provided an overview of the CNSC and its licensing, compliance, and enforcement activities; it highlighted the steps taken to strengthen the nuclear industry after Fukushima, deal with waste management, and support international security and risk management. Mr. Jamieson concluded by emphasizing that the nuclear regulator's role is to make sure that no insurance claim is ever filed.

Jason Cameron presents at the World Nuclear Association Symposium (PDF)

On September 11, 2014, Jason Cameron, Vice-President, Regulatory Affairs Branch delivered a presentation entitled "Fact versus Fiction – Nuclear Safety Communication" at the World Nuclear Association Symposium in London, England. The presentation discussed the challenges faced by the CNSC, as a nuclear regulator, when combatting the negative stigma associated with the term "nuclear", and how to effectively correct misinformation in the media through science and strategic communication platforms.

On June 17, 2014, Mr Terry Jamieson, Vice-President, Technical Support Branch delivered a presentation entitled "CNSC Response to Fukushima and Enhancements to the Regulatory Framework for the Protection of Workers" at the ISOE International Workshop on Occupational Radiation Protection in Severe Accident Management - Sharing Practices and Experiences, in Washington DC, USA. In his presentation, Mr Jamieson outlined several enhancements to the CNSC regulatory framework for the protection of emergency workers, members of the public and the environment as a result of Task Force Recommendations and the CNSC Integrated Action Plan on lessons learned from the Fukushima Daiichi accident.

In addition to outlining the highlights of our national report, Mr. Jammal reported on planned activities for continuous improvements, Canada’s responses to the Fifth Review Meeting challenges and made recommendations to the Presidents of the CNS and contracting parties.

During 2014, the Government of Quebec's Bureau d'audiences publiques sur l'environnement (BAPE) is holding a commission of inquiry to study issues related to uranium exploration, mining and processing in Quebec. From September 3 to 25, 2014, CNSC staff participated in the BAPE's public hearing phase by providing objective scientific, technical and regulatory overview presentations and answering inquiries from BAPE members. Three of the presentations were in collaboration with the Quebec ministère de l'Énergie et des Ressources Naturelles, and the Quebec ministère du Développement Durable, de l'Environnement et de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques.
