About the report
The Radioactive Release Data from Canadian Nuclear Power Plants Report provides an overview of radioactive material released from Canadian nuclear power plants into the environment, both through the atmosphere and nearby waterways from 1999 to 2008.
CNSC regulations require that each nuclear power plant, also called nuclear generating stations, undertake all reasonable precautions to protect the environment and the health and safety of persons, including identifying, controlling and monitoring the release of nuclear substances to the environment. CNSC staff verifies that licensees have programs in place to identify, control and monitor gaseous and liquid releases of nuclear substances to the environment. CNSC staff assesses environmental performance by reviewing, among other indicators, release monitoring data and public radiation doses.
This report presents the results of nuclear power plants release monitoring programs over a ten year period.
Highlights of the 1999-2008 report
Overall, the data demonstrates that radioactive releases from Canadian nuclear power plants from 1999 to 2008 were far below the set limit for the release of radioactive substances from a licensed nuclear facility. This report also confirms that public radiation doses were well below the 1 mSv annual limit as set out in the Radiation Protection Regulations.
