The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) licenses several facilities in the Greater Toronto Area. There are also nuclear facilities near Toronto in Pickering, Darlington and Peterborough.
The Monserco Waste Management Facility in Mississauga is licensed to accept, sort and process various types of radioactive waste, which are typically received from hospitals, universities, research institutes and private firms. Some of the waste is transferred to waste management areas at Chalk River Laboratories, whereas other materials are held and allowed to decay over an approved period until their radioactivity diminishes to zero—at which point they are released to landfills. For more information, see the Monserco Web site.
The University of Toronto Waste Management Facility manages radioactive waste generated within the various research and teaching labs at the University of Toronto. Waste may be stored for decay, processed, shipped to a CNSC licensed waste management facility, or transferred to waste management areas at the Chalk River Laboratories.
Metal recycling facility
Mississauga Metals and Alloys Inc. (MM&A) operates a metal recycling facility in Brampton . MM&A receives, cleans and recycles scrap metals such as zirconium, titanium and other alloys from companies in Canada and the United States. CNSC personnel perform periodic inspections of all these facilities to evaluate licensee operations, compliance with regulatory requirements, and performance in environmental protection, radiation protection, quality assurance, emergency preparedness and security. CNSC also reviews safety program documentation, procedures and performance data to verify compliance with site-specific licence conditions as well as with the Nuclear Safety and Control Act and its regulations.
