A1. The purpose of the Protocols for the Port Hope and Port Granby Project licensing activities is to establish the administrative framework, target timelines and service standards for the remaining activities of the federal regulatory process in relation to the projects. This includes the environmental assessment for the Port Granby Project and the submission of the technical information to support an application for a Waste Nuclear Substance Licence and the regulatory review of this technical information for both projects
Q2. What is the role of the CNSC?
A2. The CNSC is responsible for assessing the licence application and for issuance of a licence to AECL to allow the projects to proceed. These regulatory and statutory responsibilities fall under the Nuclear Safety and Control Act (NSCA) and its regulations. The CNSC is a responsible authority for the Port Granby Project pursuant to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEA Act).

A3. AECL is a Crown Corporation, owned by the Government of Canada and is the designated proponent on behalf of Canada for completing the project. AECL is the licence applicant for the Port Hope and Port Granby Projects.
