On November 5th, 2010, at the closing of the IAEA’s International Safeguards Symposium in Vienna, the CNSC submission in the Safeguards-by-Design session was named Best Poster. The CNSC poster was chosen over eleven other submissions from Japan, the United States, Sweden, India and Belgium. It was the product of a collaborative effort between the Directorate of Security and Safeguards and the Strategic Communications Directorate.
Safeguards-by-Design relates to taking safeguards considerations into account early in the design process to facilitate safeguards implementation and to pursue efficiencies, particularly for the facility operator. The poster demonstrated that though the concept is considered new, it has been implemented in Canada for many years by the CNSC through cooperative undertakings with facility designers and the IAEA. The most recent manifestation of the use of the approach is the current work on safeguards consideration relevant to the ACR-1000 as part of the early design review process.
Note: The poster is available only in English, as it was developed for an international symposium which was conducted in that language.
