CNSC Signs Contribution Agreement with the ICRP

10-01

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 4, 2010

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) recently signed a Contribution Agreement with the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) through which the CNSC will continue its history of financial contribution and collaboration with the ICRP on the advancement of radiation protection interests.

The five-year Contribution Agreement is up to a maximum of $100,000. In addition to its financial contribution, the CNSC will host the ICRP Scientific Secretariat at its Ottawa headquarters by providing office accommodations. This will enable the CNSC to have ready access to current information on the activities of ICRP and other international organizations, as well as first-hand interpretation of ICRP recommendations.

By providing funding, the CNSC benefits through information sharing, consultation and collaboration on advancing radiation protection interests with the ICRP.The CNSC uses this information to assist its regulatory decision-making which ultimately has an impact on our credibility and acceptance by our licensees, stakeholders and the public.

ICRP recommendations form the fundamental basis of radiation protection worldwide and underlie the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Basic Protection Safety Standards for the Protection against Ionizing Radiation and for the Safety of Radiation Sources. Aspects of the Nuclear Safety and Control Act and the pursuant Radiation Protection Regulations are fundamentally based on the recommendations of the ICRP and the IAEA Basic Safety Standards.

The ICRP is an independent advisory body established in 1928 to advance the science of radiological protection, in particular by providing recommendations and guidance on all aspects of protection against ionizing radiation. It is an independent registered charity in the United Kingdom, financed primarily through voluntary contributions from national and international bodies with an interest in radiation protection.
