CNSC Announces Decision on Environmental Assessment Track Report Regarding Saskatchewan Research Council’s Proposal to Rehabilitate Former Gunnar Mine Site
08-27
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 28, 2008
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) announced today its decision to recommend to the federal Minister of the Environment that the environmental assessment of Saskatchewan Research Council’s (SRC) proposed project to develop and implement a plan to rehabilitate the former Gunnar mine site be continued as a comprehensive study. The Minister of the Environment must now decide on this recommendation.
An environmental assessment (EA) is required pursuant to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA). In carrying out its responsibilities under the CEAA, the Commission also decided to approve the project-specific EA Guidelines.
The Commission, in making its decision, considered information presented for a public hearing held on September 17, 2008 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. During the one-day hearing, the Commission received and considered submissions from SRC and four intervenors and the recommendations from CNSC staff.
The Record of Proceedings, including Reasons for Decision, is available upon request to the Commission Secretariat. It will be available, in both official languages, on the CNSC Web site at a later date. Transcripts of the hearing are available on the CNSC Web site at www.nuclearsafety.gc.ca, or by contacting the CNSC.
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission regulates the use of nuclear energy and materials to protect the health, safety and security of Canadians and the environment; and to respect Canada's international commitments on the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
