CNSC Announces Decision on Environmental Assessment Track Report Regarding AREVA Resources Canada Inc.’s Proposal to Mine Uranium Ore Deposit in Northern Saskatchewan

Following a public hearing held on April 12, 2007 in Ottawa, Ontario, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) announced today its decision to recommend to the federal Minister of the Environment that the environmental assessment of AREVA Resources Canada Inc.’s (AREVA) proposed project that includes mining uranium ore deposit at its Midwest location in Northern Saskatchewan, be continued as a comprehensive study.
An environmental assessment (EA) is required pursuant to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA). In carrying out its responsibilities under the CEAA, the Commission also decided to approve the project-specific EA Guidelines.
During the public hearing, the Commission considered written submissions and oral presentations from AREVA, CNSC staff, and 7 intervenors.
