Presentation by CNSC President Michael Binder at the International Regulators Associations Meeting (PDF)
CNSC President Michael Binder hosted the International Nuclear Regulators Associations (INRA) meeting in Ottawa, Canada on April 16-18, 2012.
INRA is an association that comprises the most senior officials of the nuclear regulatory authorities. The main purpose of the association is to influence and enhance nuclear safety, from the regulatory perspective, among its members and worldwide.
Topics that were at the forefront for this year’s reunion included: progress on national and international initiatives as a results of the Fukushima events, strengthening of the international nuclear safety framework and improvements in international coordination in case of nuclear accidents.
Representatives from member countries Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Republic of Korea, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States attended the meeting.

CNSC President Michael Binder delivered a presentation at the CNA’s Annual Conference and Trade Show on February 23, 2012. The theme of this year’s conference was “Leadership Through Innovation” and the conference focused on both: innovative methods of communicating risk and nuclear safety, and on the exciting technological innovations on the nuclear horizon. In his presentation, President Binder revisits the top 10 marking moments of 2011 and elaborates on what he believes 2012 will hold for the CNSC.

The Schulich School of Engineering Alumni Chapter hosted its second annual Distinguished Panel Discussion on May 10, 2012 at the University of Calgary. The topic of this year’s panel was “Nuclear Power: Precious or Perilous!” Mr. Terry Jamieson, Vice-President of the CNSC’s Technical Support Branch, delivered a presentation titled “Nuclear Regulation in Canada” and answered questions about nuclear safety.

Ramzi Jammal, Executive Vice-President and Chief Regulatory Operations Officer delivered a presentation to the CAEA delegation, led by Secretary-General WANG, during their visit to the CNSC on May 1, 2012. Mr. Jammal provided an overview of the CNSC and elaborated on emergency preparedness, Canadian uranium projects, decommissioning, waste management procedures, research and development and the importance of strengthening nuclear safety from a regulatory perspective, post Fukushima.

Ramzi Jammal, Executive Vice-President and Chief Regulatory Operations Officer delivered a presentation at Insight Nuclear Energy Forum 2012 held in Toronto on March 26, 2012. Mr. Jammal’s presentation outlined how the CNSC is continuing to ensure nuclear safety to address not only the lessons being learned from the Fukushima incident but also the industry's future challenges from aging reactor fleets and proposed new builds.

The 26th biannual Conference of the Nuclear Societies in Israel brings together scientists and other distinguished experts in the nuclear field. Mr. Terry Jamieson, Vice-President of the CNSC Technical Support Branch, delivered a presentation on Canada’s response to the March 2011 events at Fukushima, from a nuclear regulatory point of view, including emergency management.

Sunni Locatelli, Director General of the Strategic Communications Directorate, has delivered a presentation at the OECD/NEA Workshop on Crisis Communication in Madrid, Spain. The presentation provided an overview of the challenges faced by the Canadian regulator after the Fukushima crisis, and discussed various strategies and factors for achieving success in reaching out to traditional and social media, disseminating prompt and reliable information, as well as rebuilding public confidence in nuclear safety.

Dr. Mihok delivered a presentation to the RIC entitled "Environmental Risk Assessments for Non-Human Species and Environmental Resources: The Canadian Experience ". The presentation addressed the CNSC's experiences in applying a holistic risk assessment framework to the protection of the environment against the effects of ionizing radiation.

On March 6, 2012, André Régimbald, Director General of the Directorate of Nuclear Substance Regulation, and Sylvain Faille, Director of the Transport Licensing and Strategic Support Division presented at the International Source Suppliers and Producers Association (ISSPA) Workshop in Bethesda, Maryland. The presentation provided an overview of recent updates to Canadian regulatory requirements and strategies with respect to the safe handling of radioactive sources.

On February 22, 2012, Dr. Patsy Thompson delivered a presentation entitled “Proposed Improvements to the Regulatory Framework for Environmental Protection” at the Canadian Nuclear Association Conference in Ottawa. In her presentation, Dr. Thompson outlined the principles and content of two new CNSC discussion papers currently out for consultation: “Protection of Groundwater at Nuclear Facilities in Canada” and “Process for Establishing Release Limits and Action Levels at Nuclear Facilities.”

On February 28, 2012 Henry Rabski, Director of the Operation Inspection Division, delivered a presentation in Vienna, Austria, at an IAEA meeting on the implementation of the Code of Conduct on the Safety and Security of Radioactive Sources. Mr. Rabski's presentation provided an update of the Canadian strategy pertaining to the management of orphaned sources, with emphasis on the key elements and actions taken by the CNSC.
