Operating nuclear power plants

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) maintains regulatory oversight of operating nuclear power plants. This oversight is done through existing Licensing and Compliance Programs administrated by CNSC head office staff and on-site inspectors.

New nuclear power plants

Recently, there has been much discussion on the need for new nuclear power plants in Canada to meet the growing demand for electricity. CNSC is currently updating its regulatory framework for nuclear power plants to draw upon international standards and best practices and to meet the growing demand for moving towards nuclear power.

For an industry-related discussion on the topic of building new nuclear power plants, please see this article entitled The Nuclear Renaissance on the World Nuclear Association Web site.
