Order to Recon Petrotechnologies Ltd.

On October 21, 2011, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) announced that it had issued an order to Recon Petrotechnologies Ltd. on October 19, 2011.

Recon Petrotechnologies Ltd. is a company based in Calgary, Alberta, that provides services to the oil and gas industry. The company holds a CNSC licence to possess sealed nuclear sources used to identify geological features in drilled oil wells.

The order was issued following a CNSC inspection conducted at the company’s location in Lloydminster, Alberta, on October 19, 2011. The inspection revealed that the company’s radiation survey meters in use at this location had not been calibrated in accordance with CNSC requirements.  The order prohibits the company from using all nuclear sources until calibrated, functional survey meters are made available for its operations.

The placement of the sealed nuclear sources in safe storage does not pose any immediate risk to the health and safety of workers, the public or the environment.
