The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) gets its authority from the Nuclear Safety and Control Act and its Regulations. It is the CNSC’s job to enforce the rules set out by these legal documents.
The CNSC has a Commission Tribunal. The Tribunal makes decisions on the licensing of major nuclear facilities, like uranium mines, research facilities and nuclear power plants.
For instance, the Tribunal’s decisions can allow a company to start building a new uranium mine or allow a nuclear power plant to continue its operations.
The Commission Tribunal includes up to seven permanent appointed Commission members who have experience in different areas such as environmental assessments, engineering and mining.
The Tribunal holds public hearings and meetings. Public hearings are open and members of the public are welcome to observe or participate.
