Project Description

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) received notice from AREVA Resources Canada Inc (AREVA) seeking an amendment to their existing licence for the McClean Lake Operation to include a new ore body known as the Caribou.

The project proposed by AREVA is to mine and mill ore reserves associated with the Caribou development. The Caribou development would be mined as an open pit and the ore would be milled at the JEB mill. No changes would be required to the mill, the tailings management facility or to the existing water treatment facilities.

Before the Commission Tribunal can make a licensing decision on AREVA’s proposal, an environmental assessment must be completed under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. The purpose of an environmental assessment is to identify the possible environmental effects of a proposed project, and to determine whether these effects can be mitigated before the project can be considered for licensing by the Commission Tribunal.

Steps ahead

  • Public consultation on draft screening report
  • EA decision by Commission Tribunal
