Latest Update Project Description

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has received notice of intent and a project description from Ontario Power Generation (OPG), for the refurbishment and continued operation of the Pickering B Nuclear Generating Station Units 5, 6, 7 and 8 until about 2060.

CNSC approval to refurbish and extend the operating life of these units requires an amendment pursuant to subsection 24(2) of the Nuclear Safety and Control Act (NSCA) to OPG’s current operating licence. The EA to be completed under the CEAA will provide part of the information that CNSC will use in considering OPG’s proposal.

Before the Commission makes its decision on licensing under the NSCA regarding OPG’s proposal, an environmental assessment must be completed in compliance with the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. The purpose of an environmental assessment is to identify the possible environmental effects of a proposed project, and determine whether these effects can be mitigated before the project is allowed to proceed.
