The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) invites the public to attend a consultation session scheduled for Saturday, June 4, 2005 to discuss the draft environmental assessment screening report of Cameco´s proposal to blend slightly enriched uranium, and to blend dysprosium uranium at its Port Hope facility. The operation of a scrap recovery circuit is also part of the proposal.
The objective of the consultation session is to clarify the content of the draft report, and to allow the public to make suggestions that will be dispositioned and might be reflected in the revised draft screening report. Once finalized, the environmental assessment screening report will be considered at a public Commission hearing, to be held at a later date in Port Hope.
The format of the consultation session will consist of concurrent discussion tables on issues identified during the environmental assessment such as criticality, lack of a buffer zone, possible impacts of the flood plain, radiation health protection, fire safety, and security and emergency response capabilities.
CNSC technical staff will be on hand at each of the discussion tables to answer questions and to clarify the recommendations of the screening report. The public will be able to contribute suggestions for dealing with each of the principal issues.
The morning and afternoon sessions will each be divided into three 35-minute segments, enabling the public to participate at three different discussion tables per session. In the time remaining after morning and afternoon sessions, the public will be able to raise any new issues during a plenary session.
